We pick a cozy spot and arrange chairs in a large circle. If there's a sizable crowd, we sit in concentric circles and work from the center outward. We choose a person to start with, and decide to move to the left or the right. The person who is "up" has three options:
1.PLAY: Play or sing a song for the group, read a poem, tell a story, play an instrumental. It's nice if you introduce yourself beforehand so that we may get to know you. If a song has a chorus that
you think folks would enjoy singing along with, you may want to teach it to the group before you begin so that we may join you. You may also invite others to play or jam along with you...or not. Your choice. All
musical styles are encouraged.
2. PICK: Choose a song you'd like to hear or have the group sing. You may also request songs of other people in the group if you are familiar with their music and want to hear something that you and perhaps the others might enjoy.
3. PASS: For the spectators, the shy, or anyone else who wishes to participate in the group but tends to blank out under pressure. Or, for anyone with their mouth full of food.
SONG CIRCLE is a traditional, relaxed way to share time, fun, art, and community. Acoustic instruments of all kinds are encouraged, but not necessary if you simply love to sing. No one dominates, but anyone
may lead the group in song or entertain when it is their turn. People may enter or leave the circle as they wish, but at all times within and without the circle, it is understood that no one is to be rude or disruptive. The circle will continue until the last hearty soul peters out, the Matrix closes, or we all file out and adjourn to the nearest gin mill to continue, to the shock and potential amusement of the local patrons.

Dave Shriver, Bruce Maier
& Friends

Shain

David Shriver is not an icon. He is a man who has done things in the music business that few of us will ever attain, yet he gives us a measure of what may become if we work hard, play well and network in the business in the right circles.
Anyone who was in the music business in the 1950's knew about Eddy Cochran, the handsome and wildly innovative guitar player who inspired everyone from George Harrison to Brian Setzer of the Stray Cats. But is was David Shriver who, after replacing the original bassist provided the Fender electric bass backing for many of Eddy's mega hits.

Bruce Maier has been a performing artist since age of seven with formal education in dance and voice. Self-taught on guitar and piano and has been writing poetry and songs since fourteen. Traveled extensively throughout the US as a band leader and front man in several show bands, playing mixes of covers, classics, Blues and Originals. Current album, ROAD OF DREAMS is available at CD baby and at all of Bruce's shows.

Shain has been known to play country & jazz swing, 60's music, fabulous originals, folk, lyrical folk-rock, Bach & more- whatever he plays, he plays well.

SHAIN's Jam Session! Goals

The goals of this event are three-fold:

1).To offer a meeting place for musicians of every stripe and ability

2).To offer informal learning sessions by way of applying basic Music theory in shared playing sessions

3).To form a house band for the Matrix

The Agenda

Of necessity, the agenda will be dependent on the quantity and quality of the participants- with the goal of everyone improving and sharing their musical skills. We intend to welcome each and every instrument (providing it can fit in the door) and we are planning on a two part program.

1).First we will focus on an acoustic based (or lightly amplified electric) song circle type learning session, where a particular song will be selected to examine for playing chords, scales, modes etc. We'll jam on it until everyone feels comfortable with it. We may break up into smaller groups where those with matching or complementary skills can help each other along. I can foresee this developing into an instruction/homework type of thing where we'll review last month's song and see how well we've come along.

[My whole philosophy of music is that one should enjoy playing, improving and sharing their skills. Hopefully it should be a pleasurable experience and one should feel free to take on as little or as much as they are happy with. This is not going to be a knuckle busting classroom, music is a nebulous thing and all instruction should be viewed only as suggestions. However it is helpful to know the basic framework of music theory before one can truly progress outside of it.]

2).The second part of our monthly session will concentrate on performance skills, with the goal of getting a functional group together.  This involves getting up on the stage and employing the sound system (electric and amplified/miked acoustics). Who knows?

Maybe a few groups (duos-trios) will develop out of this enterprise. That would certainly exceed our humble expectations.

Alyse Black After a childhood of musical theater and living abroad, Alyse began her career singing on the streets of Pike Place Market in Seattle. One rare sunny afternoon, the pianist for a local group wandered by, stood captivated for a moment, and then explained: he needed another singer for a show that night at a local club. It was perfect for a girl who was too passionate for her over-educated background. There was no looking back.
Alyse’ alternative-pop sophomore album, Hold Onto This, was recorded and produced by Ryan Hadlock (The Strokes, Foo Fighters, Ra Ra Riot, Blonde Redhead, The Gossip) and will hit the proverbial shelf on October 6th, 2009. Her first album, Too Much & Too Lovely won 1st place in Billboard’s Annual World Song Contest in Jazz among many other awards. In addition her US tours in 2008, 2009, and 2010, Alyse performs numerous major music festivals, colleges and conferences around the States. Alyse is always on tour or about to go on tour, playing a city, town, or little villiage near YOU!

"Black boldly channels Bjork, Billie, and Bush (Kate, not GW). Best yet, this jazzy, arty, oddball epic also sounds like Alyse Black more than any of her influences."

Thurs. July 22nd Mark Growden featured at Open Mic Growden's eclectic body of work is a challenge to categorize, though, as a musician, he is often compared to songwriting icons Nick Cave and Tom Waits. Additionally, Growden has been described as a wordsmith on par with the legendary Leonard Cohen – who he fittingly covers on Saint Judas with a reworked version of “I’m Your Man.”

His soulful music reinterprets older, pre-rock forms such as blues, jazz, cabaret, gypsy, and folk with a contemporary edge. While Growden cites the likes of Howlin' Wolf, Nina Simone, and Kurt Weill as influences, the new album should appeal not only to roots music enthusiasts, but also to fans of indie darlings DeVotchKa, Beirut, Rasputina, Devandra Banhardt, and Andrew Bird.
